School Counselor’s Jobs Are Misunderstood. Why It Matters.

According to the American School Counselor Association’s State of the Profession 2025 report, school counselors report that policymakers, the public, and even some within the broader school community often lack a clear understanding of the role counselors play in supporting students’ success during and after school.

While most counselors feel that students (73%), administrators (65%), and school staff (64%) have at least an adequate understanding of their role, the report is based on a nationally representative survey of more than 6,000 school counselors conducted in October 2025.

At the same time, schools are facing rising behavioral, social-emotional, and mental health needs, alongside declining academic performance—all of which are areas where counselors say they are uniquely positioned to provide meaningful support. However, the report notes that misunderstandings about their role frequently result in counselors being assigned non-counseling duties, reducing the time they can devote to the work they are trained to do.
